Seeking The Best Care
We
often receive letters from cancer-dog owners who seem to be using only
their general practice vet to treat their dogs' cancers. When they tell
us how their dog is being treated, we sometimes cringe. There are
also online canine cancer support groups, where members often reveal the
treatments their dogs are receiving. Treatments that sometimes make us
downright angry!
Cancer
is a job for an oncologist. At least as a consultant, if that's
all that's possible. To be sure, we recommend intense explorations
beyond traditional medicine, combining holistic means with standard
practices. But it must start with acquiring a qualified professional. We
try to point folks in that direction.
In
keeping with this effort, in this issue we've assembled a comprehensive
list of college/university veterinary
centers in the U.S. And there's also a few
canine cancer news
briefs at the end.
Important Vaccination News!
We have been made aware that U.S. veterinary schools are in the process
of changing their vaccination protocol. As you know, we have been
extremely concerned about this topic. It looks like progress is being
made. Finally! Click to read
more.
Your Support Is Crucial - Thanks!
We hope that
you are finding this newsletter helpful in treating and preventing
canine cancer. We are determined to keep this effort commercial-free.
It's tempting to accept ads, but we feel this would compromise our
credibility. We rely solely on our book's revenue (excluding
royalties, which we donate to
cancer research) to support this free newsletter. Please be aware
that "Sparky Fights Back" is
not only for owners of cancer-dogs. General readers, even those without
dogs, love our book and tell us so. We even get letters from human
cancer patients who claimed that they were immensely helped and inspired
by it. The book was recently nominated for a Maxwell Award in the
"General Interest" category. Thanks to all.
Many of you are
helping to "spread the word" by forwarding
this newsletter to another dog caretaker. We're rapidly approaching
8,000 subscribers. THANK YOU!!

in all your battles,"

University Veterinary Centers Are Often Your Best Bet
Cancer
in humans is rarely left to a "primary care" doctor. But many
caretakers of cancer dogs rely solely on their "family vet"
for treatment. We feel that cancer should always be in the hands of
doctors specially trained in treating it. Often, the best-qualified
specialists are to be found at
your nearest university with a school of veterinary medicine
"teaching hospital." Additionally, these facilities are often
your closest access to special equipment, offering radiology oncology
treatment, etc.
Here
is a list, alphabetically by state, of the primary veterinary teaching
hospitals in the United States. Note that this list does not include
independent veterinary
institutions and hospitals. For those, see the Appendix in our book, "Sparky
Fights Back" or check this link to Radiation
Facilities (PDF) (requires Adobe Reader). Only
the major veterinary facilities offer radiation.
For
our foreign subscribers (and we have many!), since we can't list facilities
in every country here, we suggest you inquire of your local veterinarian
about the facilities in you area. Follow this up with a Web search (in
the language of your country) such as "veterinary teaching hospital
(name of your country)."
NOTE:
We have included the telephone numbers. For further contact information
(addresses, directions, etc.) consult the Web sites, links
provided.
