Many holistic veterinarians predict that giving unnecessary vaccinations to animals will one day be considered malpractice.

AUTHORS' CORNER

Letters! We Get Letters!

Readers tend to keep us on our toes. We've always said that our newsletter is a 'two-way street.' Mainly because we've learned so much from what you, the subscribers, send us every month.

This past month, we received LOTS of reactions about John's new book, and several comments about the last issue.

Regarding our piece on the new melanoma vaccine studies, M. L. offered the following 'upbeat update':

I'm familiar with the University of Wisconsin study on the melanoma vaccine but I've personally had a dog with a high grade malignant melanoma go through a successful melanoma DNA vaccine study at the Animal Medical Center of New York. The study is headed by Phillip Bergman and the results have been phenomenal thus far. --M. L.

We did some reporting on the topic of Pet Insurance last time. Laurie Kaplan wrote:

You might mention that VPI insurance has set up a group policy for the Magic Bullet Fund. There's a small discount when people sign up through www.themagicbulletfund.org/groupinsurance.html  AND another company, Pet's Best, is in the process of creating one for us as well. Anyone at all can sign up for the policies through the fund's site and get a 5% discount.

And, of course, it's always heartening to receive notes like this one from an anonymous writer with a dog named Joey:

Joey is a lung cancer survivor, given 18 months with treatment -- and we are approaching his 4 yr anniversary! He was successfully treated at the Vet Referral Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio

We'd like to thank everyone who made our "ONE DAY  $ AL E"
on December 4th a stunning day. The idea for this event was to get as many copies of "Stop the
Shots!" out there as we could, in order to "spread the word."  The response was pretty amazing, and we thank you for your order! Many said they would have liked to have been able to buy more than two copies (the limit on that one day).

You may not be aware that cartons of FIVE and TEN books can be purchased by anyone (not just dealers)  for much less than regular
p r i ce s.  Breeders take note!
Details here.

Wishing you and your pets the best of health now and in the New Year --

"Success in all your battles,"

Cancer Diagnosis  -- A Beginning,
 Not The End

Chemotherapy hard on pets and those who love them but owners say it's the right choice

The Veterinary Emergency Clinic in downtown Toronto caters to the usual casualties: a cat hit by a car, another in heart failure, a dog who fell off a roof and one with a rubber ball lodged somewhere inside. But in a quieter corner of the clinic, a less-conventional treatment is being offered: chemotherapy. . .

Time To Say Goodbye

When should pet owners use their power of life and death?

It's tough when a pet owner has to play God. Infirm or ill pets can struggle on for years or quickly fade away. When is the right time to say goodbye? Bill Niess knows it was the right decision, but he remembers bursting into tears two months after putting his miniature dachshund, Heidi, to sleep after the 16-year-old dog developed two tumors in her chest. . .

Dog Cancer - Can Holistic Pet Care and Homemade Diets Help?

A high protein diet may not be appropriate

"Dogs with cancer can be helped using holistic pet care,” says Susan B. Davis, veterinary nutritionist for Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist ( www.AskAriel.com ). Diet and nutritional supplements can help boost a dog’s immune system, increase longevity and overall quality of life. Dogs and cats with cancer need a diet that is high in quality protein, low in carbohydrates and rich in enzymes and Omega 3 fatty acids. However, depending upon the type of dog cancer, e.g. canine liver cancer and/or other complications such as canine kidney disease, a high protein diet may not be appropriate. Thus, a customized homemade diet for dogs is often required. . .
